|Taryn Manning Biography
Taryn Manning was born on November 6, 1978, in Falls Church, Virginia. Her mother, Sharyn, worked two jobs in order to support Taryn and her older brother, Kellin, who is also in her band BoomKAT. Her father, a musician and hotel manager, committed suicide in 1993. Manning moved to Tucson, Arizona at a young age and at 12, she relocated to southern California with her mother and brother. Before leaving Tucson, Manning had become a state champion in karate. She has also studied kickboxing and Tae Bo. In California, she attended Orange County High School of the Arts, and took up an interest in dance and roller skating. She also began taking after school acting and singing classes. Manning soon realized that she wanted to pursue a career in film.
In 1999, Manning made her acting debut in an unaccredited role in the film Speedway Junky, which also featured Tiffani Thiessen, Daryl Hannah, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas. That same year she won a guest role on the hit television show The Practice. Also in 1999, Manning won a lead role in the short lived series Get Real.
After a few more guest television appearances and made-for-TV movies, Manning won the role that would put her on the map. She was cast as the wild best friend of Kirsten Dunst's character in the 2001 drama Crazy/Beautiful. She followed this role by appearing alongside Britney Spears and Zoe Saldana in the coming of age film Crossroads, and a small part in White Oleander, a drama based on a novel of the same name, both in 2002. Also in 2002, Manning won a role in the film loosely based on the life of rapper Eminem, 8 Mile.
In 2003, Manning won a small role in the critically acclaimed Civil War drama Cold Mountain, starring Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. The following year, Manning really made a name for herself when she appeared in a supporting role playing a hooker in the pimp/music film Hustle & Flow. Next, she appeared in the romantic comedy A Lot Like Love starring Amanda Peet and Ashton Kutcher.
In 2006, Manning filmed the horror films Cult and The Breed, as well as appearing in the pilot for the drama series Drive. She will next be seen in the comedy After Sex with Mila Kunis, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Bai Ling, and in the 2007 biopic Your Name Here.In addition to acting, Manning and her brother formed the band, BoomKAT, which released their first album Boomkatalog.One in 2003. The single "The Wreckoning" reached #1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, and one of the songs was featured on the 8 Mile soundtrack.
