|Sarah Michelle Gellar Biography
Sarah Michelle Gellar was born on April 14, 1977, in New York City. Gellar is the only child of Jewish American parents Arthur and Rosellen Gellar. After Gellar's parents divorced, Rosellen raised Gellar alone. Gellar was estranged from her father from this time until he died from liver cancer on October 9, 2001.
At the age of four, Gellar was spotted by an agent in a restaurant in Uptown Manhattan. Two weeks later, she auditioned for a part in An Invasion of Privacy, a TV movie. At the audition, Gellar impressed the directors and was given the role. A short while later, she got a part in a controversial commercial for Burger King, in which she criticized McDonalds and claimed to eat only at Burger King. This led to a lawsuit against Burger King, ad agency J. Walter Thompson and Gellar herself, who appeared in court as a witness for the defense. The dispute was eventually settled out of court.
Gellar attended New York's Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School. During this time, she had her third TV role as Emily in an episode of the TV series Spenser: For Hire, starring Robert Urich. She had a small part in Chevy Chase's Funny Farm, and the TV series Crossbow, based on William Tell.
Gellar then attended the Professional Children's School. Tara Reid, Macaulay Culkin, Rebecca Gayheart, and Jerry O'Connell, all also attended this school. Gellar held a straight-A average and became a competent figure skater.
After small, unaccredited parts in films like Over the Brooklyn Bridge and High Stakes, Gellar was cast as the teenage version of Jacqueline Bouvier in the made-for-TV movie on the former First Lady, 1991's A Woman Named Jackie. She also appeared in the short-lived 1992 television drama, Swans Crossing, with Mira Sorvino.
With at least 100 commercials to her credit, Gellar got her big break in 1992 when she joined the cast of the soap opera, All My Children. In 1995, she was given a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Leading Actress in a Drama Series, for her portrayal of Kendall Hart, Erica Kane's daughter.
Gellar left All My Children in 1995 when she was cast as the lead in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She stayed on the highly successful show from its beginning in 1997 to its conclusion in 2003. During her years on Buffy, Gellar studied Tae Kwon Do and eventually earned herself a black belt. She also took classes in kickboxing, boxing, street fighting, and gymnastics to assist in her portrayal of Buffy Summers.
In addition to starring in Buffy, Gellar appeared in many popular films. In 1997 she starred in I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 2, as well as other teen flicks like 1999's Cruel Intentions and Simply Irresistible. She also made an unaccredited appearance in the Freddie Prinze Jr. vehicle, She's All That (1999).
Gellar and Prinze Jr. became friends on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer, and after years of friendship and romance, the couple announced their engagement on April 14, 2001, Sarah's 24th birthday. The two tied the knot on September 1, 2002.
In 2002, Gellar was seen opposite her husband in the kid's flick, Scooby-Doo. They both reprised their roles in 2004 for Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. Gellar's next film was the 2004 horror film The Grudge, which was a success at the box office. Gellar was then seen in the sequel The Grudge 2, before appearing in the thriller The Return in November 2006.In 2007, Gellar lent her voice to two animated films: Happily N'Ever After, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
