Sarah Jessica Parker was born in Ohio on March 25, 1965. Her father, Stephen Parker, is a businessman and her mother is Barbara Forste. Parker has three full siblings and four half siblings from her mother and stepfather, Paul Forste.
As a young girl, Parker took singing and ballet classes. She studied at the American Ballet School and the Professional Children's School, which lead her to being cast in the Broadway production of The Innocents. After Parker was hired into the cast, her family relocated to New Jersey. Parker next won a part in The Sound of Music (along with four of her siblings), and the landed the lead in the Broadway show of Annie. She played Annie for one year.
Parker attended Dwight Morrow High School while she continued to act on stage and in film. In 1982, she landed a role in the made-for-TV movie My Body, My Child before being cast in the co-lead role of the sitcom Square Pegs, as high schooler Patty Greene. The show lasted only one season before being cancelled by the network, but Parker's performance was well received.
In 1984, Parker appeared in the hit film Footloose starring Kevin Bacon and continued to appear in lesser known films in the following years. In 1991, Parker finally landed a solid role opposite Steve Martin in the 1991 romantic comedy, L.A. Story. The following year she landed an important starring role in the well-received film, Honeymoon in Vegas, co-starring Nicolas Cage, and in 1993 she had a starring role in Hocus Pocus.
Parker next appeared opposite Johnny Depp in the critically acclaimed movie Ed Wood. 1996 was a film intensive year for Parker with roles in The First Wives Club, If Lucy Fell, and the Tim Burton film, Mars Attacks! In 1997, she was cast in her most famous roll to date, as Carrie Bradshaw in the hit HBO series, Sex and the City. By 1998 the first season aired and was an instant success. The show gained more and more popularity throughout its six season run. Parker won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical four times (2000, 2001, 2002, 2004) for her roll on Sex and the City, and in 2004, she won an Emmy award for Best Actress.
During her stint on Sex and the City, Parker continued to appear in films, including State and Main (2000) with Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Life Without Dick (2001) with Harry Connick Jr. After Sex and the City ended, Parker focused on films, appearing in the comedy Strangers with Candy (2005), the romantic dramedy The Family Stone (2005) and Failure to Launch (2006) opposite Matthew McConaughey.
In 2008, Parker will star in the Sex and the City film, will be seen opposite Dennis Quaid and Thomas Haden Church in the dramatic comedy, Smart People, and will star in the comedy, A Family Affair.Parker married actor Matthew Broderick in May 1997 and in 2002 the couple had their first child together, James Wilke Broderick (born October 28, 2002). She currently lives in New York with her husband and son, though the family spends a good amount of time at their home in Ireland.
