Rebecca Romijn Biography

Rebecca Romijn (pronounced Ro-mane) was born on November 6, 1792, to Jaap Romijn and Elizabeth Kuizenga, both of Dutch decent. Her father worked as a custom furniture maker and her mother was an English teacher. Romijn attended Berkeley High School and then University of California at Santa Cruz in 1991, where she majored in music. While only in her freshman year at UCSC, Romijn dropped out and moved to Paris after she got together with an agency through a friend. She soon appeared on the cover of French Elle and signed contracts with Christian Dior and Escada. She remained in Paris for over two years.

In 1995, Romijn signed with Victoria's Secret and has since done many shoots for the catalog and participated in the Victoria's Secret fashion shows. That same year she posed for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, which significantly furthered her career. Three years later she teamed up with Sports Illustrated again, this time with a swimsuit that was only painted on.

Romijn started her acting career in 1997 with a guest appearance on Friends. She had a couple of small movie parts before being cast in a reoccurring roll on Just Shoot Me! In 2000, she hit the big league when she played Mystique in the highly successful movie, X-Men, based on the comic book. She reprised her roll in the film's two sequels, X2 (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). In 2007, she will again appear as Mystique, this time in a prequel to the X-Men films titled Magneto.

Between filming the first and second X-Men films, Romijn appeared in the futuristic sport movie, Rollerball (2002), and as a con-artist in Femme Fatale (2002). In 2004, she hit the big screen in another comic book film, The Punisher starring Thomas Jane.

Romijn married actor John Stamos in September 1998. They separated in April 2004 and were legally divorced in March 2005. During her marriage, she used the name Rebecca Romijn-Stamos in both her personal and professional life, but now uses her maiden name. In September 2005, Romijn announced her engagement to actor Jerry O'Connell. On July 14, 2007, Romijn and O'Connell were married in Ojai, California.
