Rachael Leigh Cook Biography

Rachael Leigh Cook was born on October 4, 1979, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her mother, JoAnne, is a cooking instructor and a weaver. Her father, Thomas H. Cook, is a social worker and former stand-up comic. Her younger brother, Ben, is an aspiring filmmaker. She attended Minneapolis South High School.

She began her career as a model at age 10, showing up on Milk-Bone boxes and in Target ads nationwide. At 14, Cook began auditioning for acting work. She soon appeared in a memorable anti-drug commercial where she smashes an egg with a frying pan ("this is your brain on heroin") and proceeds to trash the room with the frying pan ("this is your family, friends, career, etc."). Arguably one of the few effective anti-drug spots ever made.

Cook made her film debut in The Baby-Sitters Club in 1995. That same year she won the classic roll of Becky Thatcher in Tom and Huck starring Brad Renfro and Jonathan Taylor Thomas. In the following years, Cook appeared in many independent films such as Carpool (1996), the short feature 26 Summer Street (1996), The House of Yes (1997), which earned recognition at the Sundance Film Festival, and The Eighteenth Angel (1998).

Cook's claim to fame arrived in 1999 when she was cast in the lead role of She's All That, also starring Freddie Prince Jr. The film was a surprise hit and gave Cook the acknowledgement she had been waiting for. She appeared in a handful of plum follow-up roles, including a troubled adolescent in Sylvester Stallone's Get Carter (2000), a frontier gal in Texas Rangers (2001), and the lead in the live-action version of Josie and the Pussycats (2001), with Tara Reid and Rosario Dawson.

In 2003, Cook starred in four films, including The Big Empty with Jon Favreau, and Tempo. In 2004, she starred in lesser known films including American Crime and Fearless. Cook won a role in the 2005 television miniseries Into the West. That same year she voiced Tifa Lockhart in the third-person shooter RPG Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus. She also voiced Tifa in the video game Kingdom Hearts II and in the CG movie, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Also in 2005, Cook appeared in a reoccurring role on the hit TV series Las Vegas.

Cook will next be seen in Matters of Life and Death (2006), and Descent (2006) with Rosario Dawson. In 2007, she is set to appear in Nancy Drew and The Final Season with Sean Austin.

Cook married actor Daniel Gillies in August 2004. She owns her own production company called Ben's Sister Productions.
