Naomi Watts Biography

Naomi Watts was born in Shoreham, England, on September 28, 1968. At age four, Naomi's parents divorced and at age seven, her father died. Her father was a sound engineer with Pink Floyd. After her father's death, Naomi's mother moved her and her brother around the UK until Naomi was 14 years old. It was then that her mother moved the family to Australia.

In Sydney, the aspiring actress enrolled in acting school where she met her good friend and major influence Nicole Kidman. She started going to many auditions and appeared in commercials and television melodramas as in Home and Away and Brides of Christ. She also received a small role in For Love Alone in 1986.

At 18, Naomi decided to try her hand at modeling and was hired by an agency in Japan. After a year of struggles, she realized this sort of exposure was not what for her and returned home. When she returned to Australia she took a job in a department store, and then moved on to be as assistant fashion editor with an Australian fashion magazine. While working for the magazine, Naomi kept going to auditions and landed roles in 1991's Flirting, with Nicole Kidman and Thandie Newton, and in an Australian miniseries alongside Russell Crowe.

With the ultimate desire of being a star in Hollywood, Naomi took a leap of faith and moved to Los Angeles. Bit roles in 1993's Matinee and 1995's Tank Girl gave her experience but not quite the boost she needed to become a recognizable face or name. Even after a few consecutive TV productions with CBS and parts in 1996's Children of the Corn IV, 1998's Dangerous Beauty and 1999's Strange Planet, a breakthrough performance had not yet been achieved.

Only after a callback from Twin Peaks director David Lynch did Naomi finally see true success. Her strange double character in 2001's Mulholland Drive was her first starring role in a popular movie. Acclaim went through the roof and with attention being turned toward the film with a Best Director Oscar nomination for David Lynch, Naomi began receiving long-deserved attention.

Naomi Watts' career post-Mulholland Drive has skyrocketed, with starring roles in the film short Ellie Parker and the blockbuster thriller The Ring, which hit the No. 1 spot at the box-office in its opening weekend. The following year, she starred in the film Ned Kelly opposite Heath Ledger, Orlando Bloom, and Geoffrey Rush; as well as the Merchant-Ivory film Le Divorce with Kate Hudson. It was her performance opposite Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro in director Alejandro González Iñárritu's 21 Grams that earned Watts her first Academy Award nomination as Best Actress.

In 2004, Watts produced and starred in the well-received independent picture We Don't Live Here Anymore. She reunited with Sean Penn and Don Cheadle in The Assassination of Richard Nixon, teamed up with Jude Law and Dustin Hoffman in David O. Russell's ensemble I Heart Huckabees, and starred in the sequel to The Ring, The Ring Two. Aside from balancing both independent projects as Ellie Parker, she managed to star in the biggest remake of them all, 2005's King Kong. The role, which was immortalized by Fay Wray in the original, proved to be Watts' most commercial film yet. Directed by The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, the film won high praise and grossed $550 million worldwide.

Watts starred in The Painted Veil with Edward Norton and Liev Schreiber, released in December 2006. She has since finished the films Funny Games (a remake of an Austrian movie) with Tim Roth and Eastern Promises with Viggo Mortensen. She is also scheduled to star in the remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds.

Watts previously dated director Daniel Kirby, playwright Jeff Smeenge, director Stephen Hopkins and her Ned Kelly co-star Heath Ledger for a couple years. Since spring 2005, Watts has dated actor Liev Schreiber. They co-starred in The Painted Veil. They have one son together, Alexander Pete, born on July 26, 2007 in Los Angeles.
