Milla Jovovich (pronounced Yo-vo-vitch) was born on December 17, 1975 in Kiev, Ukraine. Her father, Bogdan Jovović, is medical doctor and her mother, Galina Loginova, is a Russian actress. In 1981, Jovovich and her parents moved to London. Soon after they moved again to Sacramento, California, but seven months later, they moved yet again, this time to Los Angeles, California.
When Jovovich was only 11 years old, she was spotted by photographer Richard Avedon, and in October 1987, she was seen on the cover of the Italian fashion magazine Lei. In her first year of modeling, Jovovich appeared on 15 fashion covers and many other shoots. Though Jovovich was very young, she quickly gained popularity and respect in the modeling industry, because of her professionalism.
In 1988, Jovovich appeared in her first film, Two Moon Junction. In 1991, Jovovich received critical acclaim for her roll in Return to the Blue Lagoon, and was nominated for Best Young Actress Starring in a Motion Picture in the 1991 Young Artist Awards. She made a memorable appearance in the 1993 teen classic, Dazed and Confused, where she met her first husband, actor Shawn Andrews. The couple wed in October of 1992, while filming Dazed and Confused together, thought the marriage was annulled one month later. The following year Jovovich broke into the music world when she released her first album titled, The Divine Comedy.
In 1997, Jovovich starred opposite Bruce Willis in The Fifth Element. The film was an instant hit and launched Jovovich into stardom. She married the film's director, Luc Besson, in 1997, but the couple divorced two years later.
Her next notable roll was playing Joan of Arc in 1999's The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc. She received much praise for her performance. After some parts in smaller films such as The Million Dollar Hotel and The Claim, Jovovich landed the lead roll in 2002's Resident Evil. The film was a huge success and Jovovich reprised her roll as Alice for the sequel titled Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) and in the third film of the series in Resident Evil: Extinction in 2007.
In 2006, Jovovich was seen in the science fiction/action thriller Ultraviolet. She played the title role of Violet Song Shariff, a role that also involved heavily choreographed fight sequences and Gun Kata, a fictional martial art combining statistical analysis and gunplay. The film didn't fair as well as expected, only grossing $17 million at the box office. That same year, Jovovich also starred in .45, as Kat, the revenge driven wife of a drug dealer.
In addition to film and music, Jovovich is a spokesmodel for L'Oreal cosmetics and the Spanish clothing line Mango. She was the highest paid model in 2004 and in 2005 she and model Carmen Hawk launched a clothing line, Jovovich-Hawk.Jovovich was set to portray Amalia Bezhetskaya in Azazel in 2007, however, with the announcement of her pregnancy early that year, the film was postponed until 2009. Jovovich and her fiancé, writer/director Paul Anderson, welcomed their first child, a girl named Ever on November 3, 2007 in Los Angeles.
