|Mena Suvari Biography
Mena Suvari was born in Newport, Rhode Island on February 9, 1978. Mena's first name comes from her British Aunt named after the Mena Hotel (at the base of the pyramids in Egypt); her last name is Estonian. Suvari's father Ando Süvari, an Estonian-American psychiatrist, and Candice, a Greek American nurse. The family later relocated to Charleston, South Carolina where Suvari grew up with her three older brothers, A.J., Sulev, and Yuri, all of whom are now all enlisted in the US army.
Suvari attended middle school at the Ashley Hall all-girls school in Charleston, South Carolina, and started modeling at age 12. Her acting career began when she did a Rice-a-Roni commercial at age 13. Also at age 13, Suvari signed with the New York-based Wilhelmina modeling agency and worked with them for the following 5 years.
Suvari's early success pointed the way to her future, and by age 17, her family relocated to California to give her every chance at success. When she reached L.A., Suvari started in on TV work almost immediately--commercials at first, followed by guest appearances on Boy Meets World (1993), ER (1994) and Chicago Hope (1994). She launched her movie career in 1997, picking up small roles in Gregg Araki's Nowhere (1997) and the Morgan Freeman- Ashley Judd thriller Kiss the Girls (1997). She popped up again in the background of Slums of Beverly Hills (1998), then landed a slightly meatier role as the best friend of the telekinetic heroine in The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999). Suvari continued attending school during this time, and fellow students noticed their less than popular classmate turning up in everything they were watching. Suvari graduated from Providence High School in Burbank, California.
Suvari's ticket to fame was the teen sex quest American Pie (1999), which cast her as a wholesome high-schooler who falls for a jock (Chris Klein). A few months later, she turned even more heads as the vampish cheerleader who captures Kevin Spacey's unwholesome imagination in American Beauty (1999). The sultry-but-fragile character earned Suvari a British Academy Award nomination, as well as a flurry of job offers and gushing fansites. She followed these movies with roles in such movies as Loser (2000), Sugar & Spice (2001), American Pie 2 (2001), The Musketeer (2001), and Spun (2002).
Suvari also became a recurring character in the fourth season of the critically acclaimed HBO serial Six Feet Under in 2004, as lesbian performance poet and artist, Edie. In 2005, she appeared in the Keira Knightley flop Domino, a film based on the true life story of Domino Harvey, a bounty hunter. That same year, she played the slightly neurotic sister of Jennifer Aniston's character in Rumor Has It... In 2006, Suvari voiced Aerith Gainsborough in the Square Enix/Disney video game Kingdom Hearts II and the English-language version of Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII Advent Children. Also in 2006, Suvari appeared in Factory Girl starring Sienna Miller.
In 2008, Suvari will team up with Sienna Miller again for The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, she will be seen in George A. Romero's next zombie movie Day of the Dead, and she will star in The Garden of Eden, a film based on the Ernest Hemingway novel of the same name.Suvari married cinematographer Robert Brinkmann, who is 18 years her senior, on March 18, 2000. Suvari filed for legal separation from Brinkmann on April 24, 2005, citing irreconcilable differences. The two divorced in May of the same year. In the summer of 2005, she began dating breakdancer Mike "Murda" Carrasco.
