|Meg Ryan Biography
Born Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra on November 19, 1961, Meg Ryan grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut. The daughter of Harry, a teacher, and Susan, a teacher, former actress and casting director, Meg did not intend to become the Hollywood star she is today.
In June 1979, Ryan graduated from Bethel high school and then studied journalism at New York University. While in college, Ryan acted in commercials to earn extra money, and her mother helped her become a member of the Screen Actors Guild, under her maiden name, Ryan.
In 1981, Ryan had her big screen debut as Candice Bergen's daughter in George Cukor's last film Rich and Famous (1981). After Rich and Famous Ryan (now using her screen name) played Betsy Stewart on the daytime drama As the World Turns from 1982 to 1984. Because she could cry on cue, directors for the soap especially liked working with Ryan.
In 1984, she moved to tinsel town and landed a job in the western Television Series Wildside (1985). With her part in the highly successful movie Top Gun (1986) Meg became a star with "take me to bed or lose me forever." This led to Meg being cast in Steven Spielberg's movie Innerspace (1987) where she co-starred with Dennis Quaid. She again co-starred with Quaid in the remake of D.O.A. (1988) and they married on Valentine Day in 1991. Quaid and Ryan have one child together, Jack Henry, born April 24, 1992. The couple divorced on July 16, 2001.
After several TV film and small movie roles, Ryan was cast in a leading role in the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally... (1989). The film, also starring Billy Chrystal, was Ryan's claim to fame. The following year Ryan appeared along site Tom Hanks in Joe Versus the Volcano. This was the first of many successful films with Ryan and Hanks in leading rolls together. Sleepless in Seattle (1993) was the next hit for the duo, followed by You've Got Mail (1998). Ryan earned critical acclaim for her work in When a Man Loves a Woman (1994) and Courage Under Fire (1996). Ryan also appeared in I.Q. (1994) and French Kiss (1995).
In 1998, Ryan played a surgeon romanced by a heavenly creature (Nicolas Cage) in City of Angels, and appeared as a drug-abusing go-go dancer involved with a second-rate actor in Hurlyburly.
After a starring role in 1999's Hanging Up, Meg was next seen in Proof of Life co-starring Russell Crowe. Although Ryan had a relationship with actor Russell Crowe, after meeting on set, both she and Quaid deny it was a factor in their divorce. Ryan indicated in 2006 in an interview with Allure magazine that Quaid had not been faithful to her during their marriage.
In 2001, Ryan appeared in Kate & Leopold, co-starring Hugh Jackman. Following this film, she appeared in two films that didn't see much success, In the Cut (2003) with Mark Ruffalo and Against the Ropes (2004) with Omar Epps.
In addition to her acting duties, Meg is also founder of her own production company, Prufrock Pictures (formerly Fandango Films). In January 2006, Ryan adopted a daughter, one year old Daisy True, from China.
