Marisa Tomei Biography

Marisa Tomei was born on December 4, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York. Her mother Patricia "Addie" Tomei, is an English teacher and her father, Gary Tomei, is a lawyer. She has one brother, Adam Tomei, who is also an actor. Tomei attended Edward R. Murrow High School and graduated in 1982. She then attended Boston University for one year, before she left to take a significant role on the daytime soap opera As the World Turns.

Tomei's film debut came in 1984 when she appeared in a small role in The Flamingo Kid. Her next significant part came in 1987 when she took on the role of Maggie Lawton, on the sitcom A Different World. Tomei's claim to fame role came in 1992 when she starred as Joe Pesci's loud-mouthed girlfriend in My Cousin Vinny. Her performance earned her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

After the My Cousin Vinny buzz settled a bit, Tomei landed her first starring role in Untamed Heart in 1993. The following year she starred in the romantic comedy Only You, playing Faith Corvatch opposite Robert Downy Jr. as Peter Wright, aka Damon Bradley, in a story about a young woman's search for her soul-mate. Also in 1994, Tomei played Michael Keaton's pregnant wife in the comedic drama The Paper.

In 1995, Tomei made an appearance in the successful four part film Four Rooms. The following year, she played a struggling single mother in Unhook the Stars. Her performance earned her a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 1997, Tomei gave another impressive performance in Welcome to Sarajevo, a war drama which tells the tale of a journalist from the UK and an American aid worker's attempt to help children escape the war in Bosnia.

In 1998, Tomei took on a lighter role in The Slums of Beverly Hills playing the wild and sexually free cousin of Natasha Lyonne's character. Two years later, Tomei appeared in another successful comedy What Women Want alongside Mel Gibson. The following year, Tomei won another Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her outstanding performance in the dark drama In the Bedroom.

In 2003, Tomei appeared alongside Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler in the comedy Anger Management, and in 2004, she was seen as one of the many girlfriends of Jude Law in the remake film Alfie. In 2005, she starred with Matt Dillon in the comedy film Factotum. Though the film did not receive much attention nationwide, it received rave reviews from some of the toughest movie buffs.

In 2007, Tomei was seen with an all-star cast in the comedy Wild Hogs, the story of four middle-aged men who take a motorcycle mid-life crisis road trip and find themselves mixed up with trouble in New Mexico. Also in 2007, Tomei will be seen in War, Inc. with both John and Joan Cusak, Ben Kingsley and Hilary Duff, and in the drama Before the Devil Knows You're Dead with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke and Albert Finney. Also in the works for 2007, Tomei is scheduled to appear in the thriller The Night Job alongside Ray Liotta and Mickey Rourke.
