| Kate Walsh Biography
Kate Walsh was born October 13, 1967 in San Jose, California. When she grew up in San Jose and Tucson, Arizona. She attended the University of Arizona, where she got involved in regional theater. After school Walsh moved to Chicago and began working with the Piven Theatre Workshop and then the Chicago Shakespeare Repertory. She also performed on National Public Radio in the production of the radio play Born Guilty. She later moved to New York City and joined the comedy troupe Burn Manhattan, performing in a number of Off-Broadway plays. Walsh made her film debut in 1996 in the crime drama Normal Life, in which she played the sister of bank robber Luke Perry. The following year she played a kleptomaniac in the film Peppermills, and made a guest appearance on Law & Order. Walsh made her first major television appearance on The Drew Carey Show in 1997. She wore a fat suit for her portrayal of Niki Fifer, Drew's girlfriend and a woman struggling with her weight. Her role became a reoccurring one and she appeared on several more episodes. She went on to play Norm MacDonald's romantic interest in the sitcom The Norm Show in 1999, and Carol Nelson in HBO's The Mind of the Married Man in the 2001 television series. Walsh went on to appear in The Family Man in 2000, opposite Nicolas Cage and Tea Leoni, Under the Tuscan Sun in 2003, as the lesbian lover of her later Grey's Anatomy co-star Sandra Oh, and Kicking and Screaming in 2005, a comedy starring Will Ferrell and Robert Duvall. In 2005, she was cast in the ABC hit, Grey's Anatomy, as Dr. Addison Montgomery Shepherd. Addison was supposed to be a five-episode role, but the positive viewer response to Walsh and the character of Addison convinced creator Shonda Rhimes to expand Walsh's role and make her a series regular. In February 2007, it was announced that Walsh's Grey's Anatomy character, Addison, would be leaving the show to appear in a spin-off titled Private Practice, which began airing in September 2007. Taye Diggs, Tim Daly, Amy Brenneman, Chris Lowell and Audra McDonald co-star in Private Practice. Walsh married Alex Young, a production co-president at 20th Century Fox, on September 1, 2007, in the Ojai Presbyterian Church in Ojai, north of Los Angeles. |
