Juliette Binoche Biography

Juliette Binoche was born on March 9, 1964, in Paris, France. Her father is a film director and her mother is an actress. Her parents divorced when she was 4 years old, and afterward she lived between their two houses. Binoche's sister is actress/photographer Marion Stalens. Binoche attended Catholic boarding school when she was younger, and at 15 she went to study at a specialized arts high school before she attended the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts of Paris.

Binoche's acting career began when she was 18 and she landed a small part in the the 1983 film Liberty Belle. During this time acting wasn't paying her bills, so she worked as a department store clerk and as a painter's model. After appearing in a number of French films, including 1985's Rendez-vous, Binoche's big break came in 1988 when she was cast in The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Her performance earned her critical acclaim and more film offers. Her next notable film was Three Colors: Blue, which was the first of three films she would appear in of Krzysztof Kieślowski's acclaimed Three Colors trilogy. She won the 1993 Cesar Award for best actress for her performance.

In 1996, Binoche received much praise for her role as Hana, a Canadian nurse tending to a wounded stranger during World War II, in the award winning film The English Patient. She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. Four years later, Binoche was nominated again, this time for Best Actress, for her lead role in 2000's Chocolat, also starring Johnny Depp.

In 2005, Binoche starred in the French mystery thriller Caché, and Bee Season opposite Richard Gere. In 2006, she was seen in two more French films and starred alongside Jude Law and Robin Wright Penn in Breaking and Entering. Binoche is currently scheduled to appear in 5 films in 2007 and with an all-star cast in 2008's Picasso at the Lapin Agile, which was written by Steve Martin.

In addition to acting, Binoche has done a significant amount of modeling work, most notably as a spokesmodel for Lancome from 1995 to 2000. In January 2003 she became the new face for Italian Pret-a-Porter line, Gentryportofino.

Binoche has two children, a son Raphaël, (born September 1993) with Andre Halle, a professional scuba diver, and a daughter, Hannah, (born 2000) with French actor Benoît Magimel.
