Julia Stiles Biography

Julia Stiles was born on March 28, 1981 in New York City. Her father is John O'Hara, a teacher and businessman, and her mother is Judith Stiles, a potter. She has two younger siblings named Jane and Johnny. Stiles is of Irish, Italian and English decent. Stiles attended Friends Seminary, a Quaker prep school in Manhattan, and graduated from the Professional Children's School in New York in 1999. She then majored in English at Columbia University, and graduated in 2005.

Stiles started her acting career at 11, when she submitted photographs of herself in costume to New York's La MaMa Theatre Company and asked to be kept in mind for children's parts. She was soon performing with the company. She also performed at the Kitchen Theater when she appeared in Matthew: School of Life and The Sandalwood Box.

Stiles soon began to win small roles on television programs. She had a two episode guest appearance on Ghostwriter in 1993, as the computer punk, Erica. By 1996 she made her first appearance on the big screen in a bit part in the film I Love You, I Love You Not, starring Claire Danes and Jude Law. She next acted as a guest star on the medical drama Chicago Hope, and in 1997 she was seen the made-for-TV movie Before Women Had Wings on CBS. That same year, she appeared as Harrison Ford's daughter in The Devil's Own.

After appearing in a couple more small film roles, Stiles acted opposite Ellen Burstyn and Oprah Winfrey on NBC's miniseries The '60's in 1999. NBC used her face, painted with a peace sign and the American flag, both in its advertising for the show and on the cover of the show's soundtrack. Also in 1999, she hit her big break in the teen hit 10 Things I Hate About You, also starring Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larisa Oleynik. She won an MTV Movie Award for "Breakthrough Female Performance" for the role, and the Chicago Film Critics voted her the most promising new actress of the year.

Stiles next starred in Down to You in 2000, which earned her and her co-star Freddie Prinze Jr., a Teen Choice Award nomination for their on-screen chemistry. She then appeared in two more Shakespearean adaptation films. The first was Michael Almerayda's Hamlet in 2000, in which she played Ophelia. The second was in the Desdemona role, opposite Mekhi Phifer in 2001's O, a version of Othello set in a private boarding school. Stiles also portrayed Viola off-Broadway in a Shakespeare-in-the-Park production of Twelfth Night in 2002.

As her popularity grew she began appearing in more main stream films, including The Bourne Identity (2002) and its two sequels, The Bourne Supremacy (2004) and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). She was seen opposite Julia Roberts in Mona Lisa Smile (2003), and Stiles played a Wisconsin college student who is swept off her feet by a Danish prince in The Prince and Me (2004), and Stiles was cast opposite Liev Schreiber in The Omen (2005), a remake of the 1976 horror film.
