|Jessica Simpson Biography
Dance-pop singer Jessica Simpson was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, beginning her performing career as a member of her church choir; at 12, she also auditioned unsuccessfully for The Mickey Mouse Club. While attending church camp the following summer, Simpson was discovered by the head of a tiny CCM label, and spent the next three years recording her debut album. The label, however, folded before the record could be released, although a small pressing was eventually funded by her grandmother. Nevertheless, the teen became a hit on the Christian Youth Conference circuit, also sharing bills with Kirk Franklin, God's Property, and Ce Ce Winans.
Seeking to expand her popularity in the secular market, Simpson later signed to Sony and toured in support of boy-band sensations 98°. Her 1999 major-label debut Sweet Kisses launched the smash "I Wanna Love You Forever." A second studio effort, Irresistible, appeared in spring 2001. Despite the MTV coverage of the album's title track, Simpson's sophomore effort didn't fare as well as her first album. The following year, Simpson married her longtime boyfriend, 98° crooner Nick Lachey. She also went on to appear in several episodes of That 70s Show, but it took Simpson until summer 2003 to become a bona fide celebrity. She and Lachey's MTV-produced reality show, Newlyweds, captured countless moments of the couple's first year of marriage.
Simpson's third album, the much more mature In This Skin appeared in July 2003. First single "Sweetest Sin" was a moderate chart hit, but thanks to the success of Newlyweds, Simpson's teetering career got a second chance. A second single, "With You," was a favorite among the MTV crowd and by spring 2004, In This Skin was re-released. It included reworked versions of Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" and Robbie Williams' "Angels" as well as additional footage from the first season of Newlyweds.
Simpson released a holiday album in late 2004 entitled ReJoyce: The Christmas Album, which sold moderately. The album debuted and peaked at #14 on the billboard hot 100 in November of that year and was certified Gold sometime later. During the summer of 2005, Simpson made her first major film appearance as Daisy Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard. The film debuted at number one on the U.S. box-office chart, grossing more than thirty million USD. One of the songs from the film's soundtrack, "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," was sung by Simpson. The track won a People's Choice Award for Favorite Song from a Movie in early 2006. The controversial video directed by Brett Ratner raised eyebrows in the summer of 2005 with scenes containing Simpson washing a car in a pink bikini causing a backlash from her Christian former fans. During the filming of Dukes, well publicized rumors abound concerning an alleged affair Simpson had with co-star Johnny Knoxville. Knoxville was even queried about the alleged affair during a 2005 appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman.
In November 2005, after months of speculation, Simpson and Nick Lachey officially announced that they had split. Simpson filed for divorce on December 16, 2005, citing "irreconcilable differences." She has asked the courts not to grant Lachey spousal support. The couple's divorce has been highly publicized worldwide. A spokesperson for Simpson told the press on July 1, 2006, that the divorce had been finalized on June 30, 2006. However, the two sides had not come up with a financial agreement. The couple sold their Calabasas mansion to Malcolm in the Middle star Justin Berfield for a little over $3.75 million.
On Friday, June 30, 2006, Jessica and Nick's divorce was finalized. Jessica's name was legally restored to Jessica Simpson from her marital name of Jessica Simpson-Lachey, and Simpson asked to destroy all evidence of her former marriage, such as people burning DVD's of their old TV show.
Simpson's next album, A Public Affair, was released on August 29, 2006 with Epic Records, ending her ties with co-owned Columbia Records. Her single "A Public Affair" hit radio on June 23, 2006 with rave reviews. Chuck Taylor of Billboard Magazine called the song's production "wildly adventurous" and "maddeningly catchy." He even called the album "a perfect record." The music video premiered on July 19, 2006 on TRL. The video featured the following celebrities: Eva Longoria, Christina Applegate, Christina Milian, Maria Menounos, Andy Dick and Ryan Seacrest.Simpson's second acting endeavor, Employee of the Month, was released 2006. The film co-starred Dane Cook, and during the filming of the movie, rumors linked Simpson and Cook romantically, though neither ever admitted to anything other than a platonic relationship. Simpson's upcoming film projects include: Major Movie Star, in which Simpson will star as a Hollywood actress who joins the military, Blonde Ambition co-starring Luke Wilson, which tells the story of a young woman (Simpson) who moves to New York City and begins a business career, and The Witness, a film about a woman who commits and "witnesses" a crime and finds herself falling for the detective investigating the case.
