Beals graduated from Francis W. Parker School in Chicago, from Francis W. Parker School and Yale University, earning a B.A. in American Literature.

Beals made her film debut in the 1980 film, My Bodyguard, in a small uncredited part. She hit it big with her second film, however, in 1983's Flashdance, which she filmed when she was a freshman at Yale. She stayed in school despite her success with Flashdance, and during this time she appeared in The Bride in 1985. She became friends with David Duchovny while they were both studying at Yale and he suggested her for the female lead in The X-Files (which went to Gillian Anderson).

In 1986, Beals married filmmaker Alexandre Rockwell. During their marriage (the couple divorced in 1996), Beals appeared in many of his films; Sons (1989), In The Soup (1992) which won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize, his segment in Four Rooms (1995), and 13 Moons (2002).

In 1995, Beals appeared in Devil in a Blue Dress with Denzel Washington. The next year, she won a Golden Satellite Award for her role in the television miniseries The Twilight of the Golds.

Beals appeared in many television productions and indie films throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, including The Prophecy II (1998), Something More (1999), A House Divided (2000), and Militia (2000). In 2002, she was praised for her performance in Roger Dodger, opposite Elizabeth Berkley. The following year, she was seen in the thriller Runaway Jury, also featuring John Cusack, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman and Rachel Weisz.

In 2004, Beals landed one of the lead roles on Showtime's lesbian series, The L Word. The show became an instant success and was signed for a second season after only the first season's pilot had aired. The show was picked up for a third season before the second season had even premiered.

In 2006, Beals will appear in the horror film sequel, The Grudge 2.

Beals married Ken Dixon in 1998, and gave birth to their first child, a girl, in October, 2005. Beals is also stepmother to Dixon's two children from a previous marriage.
