Helen Hunt was born on June 15, 1963, in Culver City, California. Her father, Gordon Hunt, is a film director and acting coach, and her mother, Jane Elizabeth Novis, is a photographer. She graduated from Providence High School in Burbank, California, and then attended UCLA for one month before dropping out to pursue her acting career full time.
Hunt began studying acting with her father when she was 8 years old, and soon afterward she began appearing in professional roles in theater, on television, including a regular role in the television series Swiss Family Robinson, in 1975, an appearance on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, in 1977, and she played a pothead in an episode of The Facts of Life in 1980. From 1984 to 1986, Hunt had a recurring role on St. Elsewhere playing Clancy Williams, girlfriend of Dr. Jack "Boomer" Morrison. In 1986, Hunt also appearing in the film Peggy Sue Got Married, also featuring Jim Carrey, Nicolas Cage and Kathleen Turner.
After a number of forgettable movie roles and television appearances, Hunt competed with Teri Hatcher and eventually won the role of Jamie Buchman on the sitcom Mad About You in 1992. Co-starring with Paul Reiser as her husband, Paul Buchman, the duo created comedy gold which audiences loved. The show was highly successful and ran through 1999. For her role on the show, Hunt won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress four years in a row from 1996 to 1999, the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in 1994, 1995, and 1997, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in 1995.
During the seven years she starred on Mad About You, Hunt also appeared in a number of films including the Billy Crystal comedy Mr. Saturday Night in 1992, she starred as a tornado researcher in Twister in 1996, and she starred opposite Jack Nicholson in 1997's As Good As It Gets, a role which won her an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actress, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor.
In 2000, after the completion of Mad About You, Hunt appeared in many successful films including that year's Dr. T and the Women alongside an all star cast, she played the mother of Haley Joel Osment in Pay It Forward, also starring Kevin Spacey, appeared as Tom Hanks' love in Cast Away, and co-starred with Mel Gibson in the comedy What Women Want. The following year, Hunt starred in the Woody Allen flop The Curse of the Jade Scorpion.
In 2002, Hunt turned her focus to developing several projects under her Hunt/Tavel Productions company, and in 2003, she appeared on Broadway in Yasmina Reza's Life x 3. In 2005, Hunt appeared in the critically acclaimed mini series Empire Falls, and in 2006 she appeared in the film Bobby, which follows the people in the Ambassador Hotel where Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated. In 2007, Hunt will be seen alongside Matthew Broderick, Bette Midler, and Colin Firth in the comedy Then She Found Me, a film which she will also direct.Hunt was married to fellow Mad About You actor Hank Azaria from July 1999 to December 2000. She is currently dating filmmaker Matthew Carnahan, with whom she has one daughter, Makena' Lei Gordon Carnahan, born May 13, 2004.
