|Gwyneth Paltrow Biography
Gwyneth Kate Paltrow was born September 28, 1973, in Los Angeles, California. She is the daughter of actress Blythe Danner and television producer and director Bruce Paltrow. Paltrow's father was Jewish and her mother was raised in the Quaker religion. Paltrow has a younger brother named Jake and is a cousin of actress Katherine Moennig.
The Paltrows moved to Manhattan, New York when Gwyneth was 11 years old, where she attended Spence School, a selective private girls' school in New York City. She briefly studied Art History at the University of California, Santa Barbara, before dropping out to pursue an acting career.
While living in New York, Paltrow's mother was performing in summer stock theatre in Berkshires, Massachusetts. Gwyneth came along and became more than an audience member; she began to participate, and even co-starred with her mother in a couple of productions. After making her debut starring role in a production of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, she knew that acting was exactly what she was meant to do.
Paltrow's debut film role was in the 1991 film Shout, with John Travolta. Her big break came that same year when family friend, Steven Spielberg, cast her as Wendy in Hook. After her role in Hook she was cast as the lead in the 1992 mini-series Cruel Doubt, while her mother was offered a co-starring role, albeit after Gwyneth received the part.
The budding actress' resume was soon filling up, with roles in Malice, Flesh and Bone, Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, Jefferson in Paris, and Moonlight and Valentino.
Although audiences were beginning to take notice of Gwyneth, the film that threw her into the spotlight was her role as Brad Pitt's girlfriend in the thriller Seven, which is where the couple met. Paltrow dated Pitt for just over three years. The couple was engaged for a while but they split before walking down the isle.
Gwyneth's star was on the rise but she decided to opt for roles in smaller, less mainstream films rather than the big-budget blockbusters. She co-starred with David Schwimmer in 1996's The Pallbearer and that same year took on the title role in the comedy Emma. Next up was Hard Eight and Great Expectations.
While movies such as Hush and Knock-off may not have given Gwyneth the chance to show off her acting abilities, the film Sliding Doors brought attention to Gwyneth's talent. Rounding off a busy 1998, Gwyneth co-starred with Michael Douglas in A Perfect Murder. Paltrow was awarded the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Shakespeare in Love (1998), in which her then-boyfriend Ben Affleck also appeared.
She has since had a steady film career, with a many notable film roles, including Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), hit comedy Shallow Hal (2001) starring Jack Black, Sylvia (2003) in which she portrayed historic poet, Sylvia Plath, and Proof (2005) with Jake Gyllenhaal.Paltrow married Coldplay frontman, Chris Martin on December 5, 2003. The couple have two children, Apple Blythe Alison Martin (b. 5/14/04, London) and Moses Bruce Anthony Martin (b. 4/8/06, New York City).
