Evan Rachel Wood Biography

Evan Rachel Wood was born on September 7, 1987, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her father, Ira David Wood III, is an award winning actor, singer, theatre director and playwright, and her mother, Sara Lynn Moore, an actress. Her brother, Ira David IV, is also an actor and her half brother (from her mother's first marriage), Dana, is a musician.

Wood attended San Fernando Valley junior high school but left because she disliked the social environment. She was then home-schooled, and received her high school diploma at age 15.

Wood's career began in her father's theatre, Theatre In The Park. There she and her brother Ira appeared in many productions, including A Christmas Carol (when she was a few months old), and The Miracle Worker, in which she played Helen Keller.

Wood moved on to television in the early 1990s and appeared in several made-for-TV films. She also played Rose Russell in a few episodes of the television series American Gothic. In early 1997, after her parents divorced, Wood moved with her mother to Los Angeles. Moving to southern California proved to be a good decision when Wood was cast in the supporting role of Jessie Sammler on the television show Once and Again in 1999. She remained on the show through its last season in 2002.

Wood first significant appearance on the big screen was in 1998's Digging to China, and her big break came in 2003 with her performance as a troubled teen and daughter of Holly Hunter in Thirteen. She was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a drama for the part. Wood also had a supporting role in The Missing, starring Cate Blanchett and Tommy Lee Jones.

In 2005, Wood starred in the indie film Pretty Persuasion, in which she played a villainous, sexually-active, high-schooler. That same year she played one of Joan Allen's four daughters in The Upside of Anger, and appeared in the music videos for Bright Eyes' "At the Bottom of Everything" and Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends."

In 2006, Wood starred alongside Edward Norton in Down in the Valley and played Natalie in Running With Scissors, based on the book of the same name.

Upcoming roles for Wood include, Across the Universe (2007), a musical directed by Julie Taymor, in which she will perform musical numbers, King of California (2007) and In Bloom (2007), in which she plays a younger version of a character played by Uma Thurman.
