Her brother, Ira David IV, is also an actor and her half brother (from her mother's first marriage), Dana, is a musician.
Wood attended San Fernando Valley junior high school but left because she disliked the social environment. She was then home-schooled, and received her high school diploma at age 15.
Wood's career began in her father's theatre, Theatre In The Park. There she and her brother Ira appeared in many productions, including A Christmas Carol (when she was a few months old), and The Miracle Worker, in which she played Helen Keller.

In early 1997, after her parents divorced, Wood moved with her mother to Los Angeles. Wood first significant appearance on the big screen was in 1998's Digging to China, and her big break came in 2003 with her performance as a troubled teen and daughter of Holly Hunter in Thirteen. She was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a drama for the part. Wood also had a supporting role in The Missing, starring Cate Blanchett and Tommy Lee Jones.
In 2005, Wood starred in the indie film Pretty Persuasion, in which she played a villainous, sexually-active, high-schooler.
