Eva Mendes was born on March 5, 1974, in Miami, Florida, but she was raised in Los Angeles, California from the age of 2. Her parents are from Cuba and split up when Mendes was 10 years old. She is the youngest of four children. Mendes graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale, California, and then attended California State University Northridge where she majored in marketing before dropping out to pursue an acting career.

Mendes started her professional acting career with an appearance on the popular television series ER in 1998. That same year she appeared in her first film, Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror, followed by the Saturday Night Live film A Night at the Roxbury, starring Chris Kattan and Will Farrell. After getting small parts in a few less notable films and television shows, she was seen in the horror film Urban Legends: Final Cut in 2000.

In 2001, Mendes was seen in Exit Wounds starring Steven Seagal and DMX, and as Denzel Washington's girlfriend in Training Day. In 2003, Mendes won her first big part in the car racing film 2 Fast 2 Furious. That same year she acted alongside Johnny Depp, Antonio Banderas, and Salma Hayek in Once Upon A Time in Mexico. At the end of 2003, Mendes again teamed up with Denzel Washington, this time with a more substantial part in Out of Time. She followed up a year of serious movies by adding the comedy, Stuck on You to her resume.

In 2005, Mendes won the lead female role in the romantic comedy, Hitch, also starring Will Smith. This was not the first time Mendes had worked with Smith, as she had appeared in his music video for his song "Miami" years earlier. That same year she was seen with an all-star cast in Trust the Man.

Mendes will next appear in 2007's comic book movie Ghost Rider, starring Nicolas Cage, and the crime film We Own the Night with Robert Duvall, Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix.
