Erica Durance was born on June 21, 1978, in Alberta, Canada. Her father, Joel, was a truck driver, and her mother, Gail, was a librarian. She grew up with her older brother and sister on a turkey farm in Three Hills, Alberta. After graduating from high school, Durance moved to Vancouver to pursue a full time acting career.

After being discovered by agent/talent scout Jeff Palffy, of PMG Management in Vancouver, Durance appeared in her first role in 2002 in the film The Untold. The following year she was seen in the television movie 111 Gramercy Park, followed by the horror flick House of the Dead.

After appearing in a number of guest spots on televisions shows, including Tru Calling and Stargate SG-1, Durance landed the role that would be her big break, playing Lois Lane on Smallville. She was a frequent guest-star for the fourth season of the show (2004-2005), and joined the regular cast for the fifth season (2005-2006).

In 2006, Durance starred in the DVD release sequel movie The Butterfly Effect 2, and she will next appear in the film Ecstasy in 2007.
