Avril Lavigne Biography

Avril Lavigne was born to Judy and John Lavigne, both French-Canadians, on September 27, 1984. She has one younger sister, Michelle and one older brother, Matthew. Lavigne was a determined young girl and taught herself to play guitar when she was only 12 years old. She knew she wanted to be a singer at a young age, and she was originally pursuing a career in country and folk music, but transitioned into punk-rock because of its more lucrative probabilities. Lavigne dropped out of high school and moved to New York, after the 11th grade when she secured a record deal.

When Lavigne was almost 18, she released her single "Complicated" from her debut album, Let Go."Complicated" went to number #1 on Billboards Top 100. The album was an instant success, and was soon certified platinum four times. Lavigne was named Best New Artist at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, won four Juno Awards in 2003 (out of six nominations), a World Music Award for World's Best-Selling Canadian Singer, and was nominated for eight Grammy Awards.

In May 2004 Lavigne released her second album, Under My Skin. It debuted at number one in the U.S., the UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, Canada, Spain, Ireland, Thailand, Korea and Hong Kong and sold more than 380,000 copies in U.S. in its first week. The album included the hit singles "My Happy Ending" and "Don't Tell Me." That year, she won two World Music Awards for World's Best Pop/Rock Artist and World's Best-Selling Canadian Artist. She received five Juno Award nominations in 2005, of which she won three. She also won the award for Favorite Female Singer at the eighteenth Annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.

Lavigne isn't just a successful singer, but also a songwriter. In additions to contributing to her own albums, she co-wrote Kelly Clarkson's hit single "Breakaway" with Matthew Gerard. The song was recorded for the soundtrack for the film The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004).

After much success in the music world, Lavigne broke into film when she lent her voice to the animated picture, Over the Hedge (2006). She will also be seen in The Flock, with Richard Gere, and Fast Food Nation, based on the book of the same name.

In June 2005, Lavigne became engaged to Sum 41 lead singer Deryck Whibley, whom she had been dating since February 2004. The couple married on July 15, 2006.
